Seagate Central SAMBA, Linux and Software Upgrades!

Hi everyone! Thanks for following this blog so closely over the last half a decade while I haven't updated it at all.

I wanted to let everyone know about some projects I found on github that let you do some incredible things with your old Seagate central. Go and retrieve it from the attic or the garbage bin and bring it back to life again with these projects!!

Upgrade the SAMBA Server!

Do you get an annoying error message when you try to connect to your Seagate central saying Error code: 0x80070035?? This is because the SAMBA service on the central is out of date and not secure.

You can upgrade SAMBA with this project

https://github.com/bertofurth/Seagate-Central-Samba/

This project uses the root recovery by firmware upgrade process that I invented on this web page except it does it all automatically with a script. Very easy to use.

Upgrade the linux kernel!!

Do you want to make your Seagate central twice as fast?? Do you want to be able to install new software on your central?? Do you want your central to be able to use IPv6??? You can if you upgrade the linux kernel!!

This kernel upgrade unlocks the power of BOTH CPUs . The original software only supports one!! Upgrading the kernel also lets the Seagate central run virtually **any** new linux software because it will now be running the latest linux kernel!

Install new software!!!

You can compile and install new software for the Seagate central. These instructions let you install all kinds of amazing new services, like Syncthing and other cool linux utilities.

It even gives instructions on how to turn your Seagate central into a WEBCAM!!!

If you install a webcam on your Seagate Central then you might
need to be more careful about where you keep it!!

All of these projects need you to do a bit of linuxy hacking but I know that all of my readers are intelligent enough to be able to handle it.

Thanks everyone! Maybe I'll post another update next century!!
